1994: Dave Anderson

1994 Red Smith Award winner Dave Anderson was a long-time sports columnist at the New York Time and in 1981 became just the second sports writer to win a Pulitzer Prize.

Anderson graduated from the College of Holy Cross in Massachusetts in 1951. He worked for several news organizations early in his career, including the New York Journal-American, where he was hired in 1955.

He was hired by the Times in 1966 and was given a regular column there in 1971. He retired from the Times in 2007, although he continued to contribute occasional columns to them through 2017.

Among his many honors, Anderson was inducted into the National Sportscasters and Sportswriters Hall of Fame in 1990.
