1989: Edwin Pope

1989 APSE Red Smith Award winner Edwin Pope was a sports editor and columnist with the Miami Herald for more than 50 years. He was hired at the Herald in 1956 and wrote his final column for the paper in 2016.

Pope began his career at the age of 11, covering events for his hometown paper, the Athens Banner-Herald. He was promoted to sports editor of that paper at the age of 15.

Pope went to college at The University of Georgia and also worked for the Atlanta Journal, the Atlanta Constitution and the United Press International.

Pope was promoted to sports editor at the Herald within a year of being hired there and held that position until 2003. He is a member of the National Sportscasters and Sportswriters Hall of Fame, the College Football Hall of Fame and the Pro Football Hall of Fame.
